Overview

Sheep Gut Strings for Frets LLD® | Le Luth Doré®

Le Luth Doré® partners with specialists to revive traditional artisanal string-making techniques as practiced during the golden age of great lutenists.

All our LLD® sheep gut frets are handmade and polished following historical methods passed down through generations.

Historically, all strings and frets were made from sheep gut, prized for its flexibility, reliability, and acoustic qualities.

Unlike many modern industrial products often made from cow gut, we strictly use only the highest quality sheep gut.

Frets with diameters above 1.10 mm are too stiff to tie properly, while those below 0.70 mm lack sufficient tension under the left hand, even for experienced players.

Therefore, we exclusively offer diameters between 0.70 mm and 1.10 mm.

Our gut comes colorless, in standard lengths of 125 cm, ready to be cut and fitted.

Lute Strings

Designed for discerning lutenists, our strings and gut combine tradition and performance.

Aquila Nylgut® string sets for Renaissance lutes (7-course, 8-course) and Baroque lutes (11-course, 13-course) offer a stable, warm, and natural sound.

For frets, we offer LLD® sheep gut, hand-polished, and Kürschner sets made from cow gut. Two complementary approaches for authentic and precise playing.
